How to De-Petite the Brooklyn Hoodie

Posted by Betsy C on

Adding length to a pattern is an easy job, but how much do you add? SBCC patterns are drafted for 5'1"ladies, but please do not add 6" if you are 5'7" (we all know that, right?). The amount is surprisingly much more subtle.

Here is what I would do for a 5'7" lady, or anyone not petite:

You will only need to modify 4 pieces:

  • Front body
  • Back body
  • Sleeve
  • Pocket

1) Cut along the length addition lines. This will accommodate for both the short and the long versions.

2) Around the midpoint of the sleeve cut straight across.

3) Below the pocket opening, cut straight across the piece.

4) Insert a strip of paper wide enough to accommodate the length between the cut sections on the front and the back. Measure a 1" (2.5cm) gap between the two pieces and tape in place.

5) Insert a strip of paper wide enough to accommodate the length between the cut sections on the sleeve. Measure a 1/2" (1.2 cm) gap between the two pieces and tape in place.

6) Insert a strip of paper wide enough to accommodate the length between the cut sections on the pocket. Measure a 1/2" (1.2 cm) gap between the two pieces and tape in place.

Trim off the long edge and tape the back sides to stabilize. A pretty easy addition, right?

Yeah, I know de-petiteing is not a real world, but it makes the most sense, right? If you have other suggestions for this kind of alteration I am totally open because there are a lot more coming!

  • 1" adjustment would be totally ok!

  • So, being dumb here, I’m 5’8", I guess I would probably be fine with 1" adjustment?

  • I’m 5’4 and I have a long torso. I didn’t have a problem with the length on either the short or long version.
