Pegu Pants Sewalong

Pegu Pants Sewalong

Welcome to the Pegu Pants sewalong! The Pegu Pants can be a super quick project if you are experienced with knit fabrics. If you are a beginner it is the perfect project to dip your toes into making pants. They are so straightforward that we are keeping this to one single blog post sew along. Let's get started.

1) With right sides together, position the pocket bag on the right side of the front pant leg, aligning at the angled edge. Sew together along edge with 3/8” (1cm) seam allowance.

Tip: The pocket bag can easily stretch along this seam. It is strongly suggested to place a narrow strip of interfacing where the seam will be to help stabilize.

2) Turn pocket bag upwards and iron seam up towards pocket bag. Understitch the seam allowance through all layers on the pocket bag side. Stitch close to the edge of the seam.

3) Position right side of the pocket bag facing on top of the pocket bag. Sew the two layers together with 3/8” (1cm) seam allowance, or a serged edge along (A) center edge and (B) bottom edge.

4) Baste the pocket bag to the front leg along the top edge and side seam.

5) With right sides together match one set of front and back legs together at the outseam and inseam. Sew together with 3/8” (1cm) seam allowance. Repeat for opposite side.

6) Turn the legs right side out and join right and left legs together by sewing the rises from top front to the top of the back. It is important that this seam must allow for stretch so the seam does not break. Use either a stretch stitch setting or serge the edges together.

7) Fold the waistband in half matching the short ends. With right sides together, sew together with 3/8” (1cm) seam allowance.

8) Take the cut elastic piece and sew the ends together by overlapping edges 3/4” (2cm). Make 2 parallel rows of stitching to secure. (photo intentionally shows elastic misaligned to demonstrate overlap. Please make sure that elastic is level when joining the two ends.)

9) Fold the waistband in half horizontally so wrong sides are together. Iron flat.

10) Position the elastic inside the waistband. Baste the two layers of the bottom edge of the waistband together to encase the elastic inside.

11) Join the waistband to the pants aligning waistband seam to the center back seam and matching notches to the seams. The waistband should be on top of right side of body folded edge facing down. Stitch through all layers with 3/8” (1cm) seam allowance or serge together.

12) To prevent elastic from moving, add a straight stitch in the center back seam through all layers.

13) Finish it up! Turn back the bottom hem 3/4” (2cm) and topstitch.

That's it! The Pegu pants can be a quick 2 hour project to sew if you are speedy, but also a good project for beginners to take your time on. Either way, you end up with a comfy pair of pants.
